Fact Check
The viral video had the logo of the news outlet ‘The Quint’ and the title of the video read ‘PM Modi Addresses a Rally in Patan, Gujarat’. Taking a cue from this, we searched on Google and found this video of PM Modi’s speech during the last Lok Sabha elections on the YouTube channel of ‘The Quint’. This video is from April 21, 2019.
From 43 minutes 19 seconds into the video, PM Modi says that if his party comes to power, a separate ministry for water will be created. The next line of PM Modi’s speech is present in the viral video, in which it is claimed that he used an abusive word. The original line in Gujarati is, “લોકો એમ કહે છે બાવિશ માં લાઈ પાની ની થવા ની છે. The one who is not punctual I will not tolerate them, no one should touch them, the more I will not touch them.
Its Hindi translation is, “People say that in the coming times there will be a fight over water. If everyone is saying this, then why don’t we build a dam across the water right now”.
We also translated this sentence into English as, “People are saying that in the future, there will be a fight for water. And if everyone is saying there is a fight for water, why don’t we take precautions now?”
The last part of the speech quotes a Gujarati proverb, ‘paani paar bandhna’ which means to prepare in advance to deal with any situation, which PM Modi was using in reference to the proposal of the water ministry. He is not heard using any abusive words anywhere in the viral speech.
