There is an ongoing uproar over NEET, one of the biggest medical examinations in the country. Congress leader Mukesh Nayak has alleged that there has been rigging in the evaluation after the examination. This is why the students have got 718 and 719 marks. According to Mukesh, the structure of this examination is such that no student can get so many marks. Despite this, one student has got 718 marks and one girl student has got 719 marks. However, the National Examination Agency has given clarification in this matter.
When students got 719-718 marks, NTA had said that there was some problem in some examination centers. Due to this, the students’ time was wasted. An appeal was made for grace marks in this matter. Grace marks were given to the students to compensate for the loss of their time. Due to this, one student got 718 marks and one girl student got 719 marks.
What is the matter?
The NEET UG 2024 exam was conducted on May 5 at 4,750 centres in 571 cities, including 14 foreign cities. More than 24 lakh candidates appeared for the exam. The NTA released the results, cutoffs and names of toppers on June 4. After this, lakhs of students demanded the NTA to conduct the exam again. The Supreme Court was also asked to intervene in the matter. Students raised concerns about how 67 candidates managed to secure the top rank, pointing to a possible increase in the numbers. Notably, 6 of these top scorers were from the same exam centre in Haryana, raising suspicion about the examination process.
NTA denied the allegations
According to NTA, the cutoff score is decided every year on the basis of the overall performance of the candidates. The cut-off and average marks (out of 720) of the eligible candidates vary every year. NTA said that the cutoff for the general category was 147 in 2020, 138 in 2021, 117 in 2022, 137 in 2023 and 164 in 2024. It was further told that CCTV cameras were installed at all the exam centers. NTA gave several reasons for the high marks. The examination agency said that the marks have come high due to changes made in NCERT books and giving grace marks to compensate for the lost time at some examination centers. NTA said that the number of candidates has increased from 20,38,596 in the year 2023 to 23,33,297 in 2024. This is why the cutoffs went so high.
