In the BBC documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’, it has been told how PM Modi is affected by the 2002 Gujarat riots and the court disputes related to it. The government is being criticized after the documentary was allegedly banned. Calcutta and Phantom India
Let us tell you that the BBC’s pastime of making documentaries against the Government of India is not new. Before ‘India: The Modi Question’ and ‘India’s Daughter’, the British broadcaster had released Calcutta and Phantom India against the government in the 1970s.

Decades ago, in the documentary ‘Final Solution’ directed by Rakesh Sharma, it was told that the communal violence in Gujarat was planned. The Central Board of Film Certification did not pass the documentary, terming it as spreading violence in the society.
Ram’s name
If we talk about controversial documentaries, then Anand Patwardhan’s documentary ‘Ram Ke Naam’ is counted among the most controversial documentaries. Filmed in 1992, the documentary is based on the Vishva Hindu Parishad’s (VHP) campaign for the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya.
India’s daughter
Significantly, another BBC documentary created controversy in 2015. Leslie Udwin’s ‘India’s Daughter’ was based on the infamous Nirbhaya gang rape and murder in Delhi. After excerpts from the film, including parts of an interview with one of the rapists, Mukesh, were aired, the police approached the court to ban the documentary. However, BBC did not release it in India.
