The opposition party has been attacking the ruling party since the train accident in Darjeeling, West Bengal. The Kanchenjunga Express was hit from behind by a freight train in which 9 people died and many others were injured. From social media to various platforms, the opposition is claiming that train accidents have increased under the current government. However, railway sources have released data and called the opposition’s claims false.
How many accidents in whose government?
Railway sources claim that rail accidents are decreasing in the Modi government as compared to the Congress coalition government. According to the data, the average number of train accidents resulting in the Congress coalition government during the period 2004-14 was 171 per year. On the other hand, the average number of train accidents resulting in the Modi government during the period 2014-23 has decreased to 71 per year.
Why are railway accidents decreasing?
Railways claims that the reason behind this is the efficient management of the railways and many such measures have been taken which have reduced such accidents. Railways claims that Rs 45,000 crore has been spent to eliminate accidents caused by human failure. Electrical/electronic interlocking systems with centralized operation of points and signals have been provided at 6498 stations by October 2023. Along with this, interlocking of level crossing (LC) gates has been provided at 11137 level crossing gates by 31.10.2023 to increase safety at LC gates.
Congress demanded resignation of Railway Minister
Accusing the government of destroying the Indian Railways, the Congress demanded the resignation of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in the wake of the Kanchenjunga Express accident and said he has no moral right to continue in office. The opposition party also took a dig at Vaishnaw for reaching the accident site riding pillion on a motorcycle, asking whether he is the Railway Minister or the real minister.
