New Delhi. If MDH and Everest spices are being used while cooking in your home, then be a little careful. In fact, food regulators in Hong Kong and Singapore have issued a warning to people regarding four products of these big spice brands. They say that some elements have been found in these spices which are likely to cause cancer. In this regard, food regulators in Hong Kong and Singapore have issued a statement in relation to three products of MDH Masala and one product of Everest Masala, claiming that the level of ethylene oxide in these spices ‘exceeds certain limits’, which is a factor in causing cancer. Hong Kong’s food regulatory authority, the Center for Food Safety (CFS), in a statement posted on its website on April 5, said three of MDH’s masala products – Madras Curry Powder, Sambar Masala and Curry Powder and Everest Fish Curry Ethylene oxide, a pesticide, has been found in excessive quantities in the masala. These products are being recalled from the market by CFS. According to a CFS spokesperson, a conviction in this case could result in a maximum fine of $50,000 and six months in prison.
The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has also ordered Everest’s fish curry masala to be recalled from the market. In this regard, the importer, SP Muthiah & Sons has been directed to recall the concerned product as soon as possible. According to the SFA, there is no immediate danger from eating foods containing low amounts of ethylene oxide, but long-term health problems may occur, so consumption of such foods should be avoided as much as possible.
