Ramkumar Ramanathan (ranked 170) and Yuki Bhambri (590) will face Denmark in their singles matches of the Davis Cup World Group 1 play-off tie on Friday. Captain Rohit Rajpal and coach Zeeshan Ali preferred lower seed Yuki in place of 246th-ranked Prajnesh Gunneswaran.
In the first singles, Ramkumar will face Denmark’s Kristian Sigsgaard (833), while in the second singles Yuki will face Denmark’s No. 1 Michael Torpigaard in the tie drawn by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday.
India will go to Group-1 on winning
This tie going to be held in Delhi Gymkhana is very important for India. On winning here, the Indian team will get a place in the World Group 1. If India loses in this two-day tie, it will move to World Group 2. Never in the history of Davis Cup has India been in World Group 2.
This is the reason why India chose the grass court for this crucial tie. After 56 years, the Davis Cup is going to be tied on the grass court of Delhi Gymkhana. Earlier in 1966, India defeated Germany on the basis of Ramanathan Krishnan, Jaideep Mukherjee and Premjit Lal here.
Rohan and Divij will enter doubles
Divij Sharan will play alongside veteran Rohan Bopanna in doubles on Saturday. Earlier there was a plan to field Ramkumar with Rohan, but on the second day it was decided to play Divij as there was not much time in singles and doubles. The two will play world No. 17 Danish captain Friedrich Nielsen and Johannes Ingildsson.
In the reverse singles, Ramkumar will face Torpigaard and Yuki will play Sigsgaard. The last Davis Cup tie between India and Denmark was in 1984 in Aarhus (Denmark), where India won 3–2. India had lost to Finland in Group 1 last year. 3800 spectators have been allowed in the gymkhana. For which no ticket has been booked.
On the grass, the hosts hope for a profit
Danish skipper Nielsen says he is being underestimated against India but doesn’t think any team is going to get an added advantage here. His team has experience of playing against big teams. Denmark’s performance against Spain was very good. She will try her best to surprise India.
Sigsgaard is in excellent form. At the same time, Rohit Rajpal believes that he will get the benefit of playing on the grassy court. Ramkumar has practiced a lot here. Yuki, on the other hand, says that he has not played on grass courts in the Davis Cup so far, but he has experience playing on grass. Hope he does well here.
