Four people trapped in a sewer in Delhi’s Rohini area on Tuesday evening could not be saved despite all efforts. The NDRF team took out the bodies of the four in the morning. Three laborers who entered Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar to repair the telephone cable passing through the sewer were trapped. The rickshaw driver who went to rescue them also got trapped inside. The NDRF team carried out the rescue operation throughout the night, but no one could be saved.
According to the information, telephone cable is passing through the sewer in E block of Rohini sector. There was a complaint of fault in these cables. The contract to repair the fault has been given to a private firm based in Janakpuri. The police officer said that on Tuesday evening, Supervisor Suraj Sahni along with two laborers Bacchu and Pintu went to the spot to do repairs. Bachchu and Pintu entered after removing the sewer cover about 15 feet deep. Apart from the telephone in the sewer, there were also electrical wires. After not leaving for a long time, Suraj entered the sewer to see them. But he himself got trapped.
During this, rickshaw driver Satish, who was standing there, saw this accident. He entered the sewer to save their lives. One by one, there was a stir when four people got stuck in the sewer. The police and fire brigade were informed about the incident at around 6.30 pm. After this the rescue team reached the spot.
Poisonous gas and electric wires became a hindrance
About 15 feet deep sewer is filled with poisonous gas. Also there are power cables. Because of this, it was difficult to start the rescue work. There was a possibility of getting stuck in between the wires. So the divers and the fire brigade were having trouble going inside. After about two and a half hours, the work of breaking the sewer through JCB started. Then the rescue work started in full swing.
Entering the sewer without safety equipment
The police officer said that they did not have the necessary safety equipment while entering the sewer for repairs. Whereas there should have been gas cylinders and other body protectors.
Huge crowd on the spot, police engaged in clearing the traffic jam
The police officer said that Bachchu and Pintu live in Uttam Nagar area. At the same time, rickshaw driver Satish lived in the nearby Sardar Colony. On the spot, Satish’s brother Deepak had informed about his brother’s disappearance. Since the spot is located on the main Bawana road. People stopped their vehicles and started getting information. The reason for this became a situation of jam.
