New Delhi. Denying all allegations that the investigation into the Jahangirpuri communal violence was one-sided and targeting only members of a particular community, Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana on Monday said the police was not discriminating against anyone. The commissioner said in a media briefing, “During the investigation, if we find evidence against any person, we will take action and arrest them, irrespective of class, creed, community and religion. We are not discriminating against anyone. The 23 people arrested so far belong to both the communities.” He assured that the communal violence in North West Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area will be investigated from all possible angles. “The matter will be investigated from all angles and we will ensure that action is taken against anyone who directly or indirectly participated in the violence,” the commissioner said.
The Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit of the Special Cell has been tasked to conduct a detailed analysis of all digital evidence and identify the suspects involved and initiate legal action, he said. Notably, the case has been formally transferred to the Crime Branch of Delhi Police. The top Delhi Police official said, “The Crime Branch has formed around 14 teams which will probe the incident from all angles. They have started investigation from yesterday and we will share updates regularly during the course of the investigation.”
Speaking on accused Ansar’s connection with a particular political party, the commissioner said that the police run by evidence. “We will take appropriate and effective legal action against anyone found involved in the incident and our investigation is subject to court scrutiny, so there will be no discrimination,” Asthana said.
He further said that through social media some people are trying to stop the situation from returning to normal. “We are keeping a constant watch on social media and if necessary, legal action will be taken against those spreading misinformation,” the commissioner said. Apart from investigation, Delhi Police has also spoken to more than 20 peace committees, i.e. Aman committees.
He said, “We are ensuring that only a handful of anti-social elements do not harm the common citizen. We have seen this earlier also that only anti-social elements take part in such incidents, common man has nothing to do with such activities.”
