new Delhi. A Delhi court on Thursday rejected the bail plea of former JNU student-activist Umar Khalid in a case related to the alleged “big conspiracy” behind the Delhi riots. Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat on Wednesday deferred his decision for the third time and posted it for Thursday, stating it was “under rectification”.
The orders, which were originally scheduled to be pronounced on March 14, were listed for March 21. But after the prosecution filed a written note, the court adjourned it and posted it for March 23 (Wednesday).
On March 3, a bench had reserved its order after hearing the arguments of the parties in the matter.
Opposing the bail plea, Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Amit Prasad argued on the relevance of the speech made by Umar Khalid in Amaravati in February 2020. He said the bail application was rejected on February 11, announcing the visit of Donald Trump, who had visited India on the same day.
During the hearing, Khalid’s counsel opposed the charges under the Indian Penal Code and UAPA, terming the chargesheet as a “work of fiction”. He argued that the speech delivered by Khalid was about Gandhi, harmony and the Constitution and was not a crime. After arguments, the court had reserved the order.
Khalid, one of the accused in the conspiracy case, has been booked under the Anti-Terrorism Act- Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Riots erupted in Northeast Delhi in February 2020 following clashes between anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) and pro-CAA protesters.
The devastation, which coincided with the first visit of the then US President Donald Trump to India, claimed more than 50 lives and left over 700 injured.
