On May 6, Additional Sessions Judge Sunil Kumar pronounced his verdict in the 2015 rape and brutal murder of a six-year-old girl. Ravindra was convicted for the offenses of kidnapping, rape, murder and destruction of evidence apart from POCSO. The court noted that the six-year-old helpless girl had fought till her last breath to escape from the clutches of the accused under adverse circumstances. The convict was sentenced to life imprisonment for the offense of rape, while the sentences awarded for the other offenses would run concurrently.
Keeping in view the family and economic condition of the convict, the Court did not impose any burden on him to pay compensation to the victim’s family. This responsibility was given to the Legal Services Authority of the concerned district, which has been directed to pay Rs 15 lakh as compensation to the victim’s family. Appreciating Special Public Prosecutor Vineet Dahiya and defense counsel Abhishek Srivastava, the judge said in his order that due to their efforts, the trial of the present case was completed in a timely and effective manner.
The defense pleaded with the court for leniency in the sentence on the basis of the convict’s age and clear antecedents. In protest, SPP Dahiya said that the convict has no remorse for his act. In his confessional statement, he confessed to the rape and murder of more than 30 innocent children. Therefore he deserves the death penalty. Describing himself as innocent from the court, the convict pleaded for leniency in the punishment. The prosecution had produced 24 witnesses to prove Ravindra guilty.
Court’s denial of mercy
Refusing to show mercy to the convict, the court said, he should get maximum punishment for the crime, so that a message goes to the society that our judicial system has no sympathy for criminals and every crime will be punished appropriately. The court sentenced Ravindra to life imprisonment for the crime of rape. Punishment for other offenses will also run concurrently. The case is of Begumpur police station. The girl’s parents had lodged a missing report. During investigation, the girl’s body was recovered from the bushes.
