Kolkata . Confusion over singer-turned-politician Babul Supriyo’s swearing-in ceremony as the newly-elected Trinamool Congress MLA from Ballygunge has finally come to an end with Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar’s nod. However, the Governor has empowered Deputy Speaker Ashish Banerjee to administer the oath in place of Speaker Biman Banerjee.
An order signed by the Governor said, “By virtue of the power vested in me by Article 188 of the Constitution of India, I, Jagdeep Dhankhar, the Governor, State of West Bengal, hereby designate Ashish Banerjee, Deputy Speaker, West Bengal Legislative Assembly as that person.” I appoint, before whom Babul Supriyo elected to the Legislative Assembly of West Bengal from the 181-Ballygunge Assembly Constituency, shall make and subscribe an oath or affirmation in accordance with the form prescribed for the purpose in the Third Schedule to the Constitution.”
Earlier, the Governor had refused to approve the file related to the swearing-in ceremony.
Assembly sources said a file was sent to the governor’s office for approval, where the governor’s concurrence was sought, so that the swearing-in ceremony could be held inside the assembly premises and the oath was administered by Speaker Biman Banerjee.
The by-election for the Ballygunge assembly constituency was held on April 12 and the results were declared on April 16, with Supriyo emerging as the winner by a margin of 2,022 votes.
