The pair of Sania and Haradeka, despite dominating the first set, went down to Ukraine’s Lyudmila Kichenok and Latvia’s Yelena Ostapenko 6-2, 2-6, 7-10 on Friday night.
The wild card pair of India and Czech Republic saved 11 break points while winning two out of three break points in the first set to take a 1-0 lead in the WTA 500 tournament. Sania and Haradeka, however, failed to maintain the momentum and Kichenok and Ostapenko came back to win the second set and then win the match.
Sania won the title here in 2013 along with Bethanie Mattek-Sands of America.
The 35-year-old Sania, who has won six Grand Slam titles including three mixed doubles, is India’s most successful female tennis player. She has already announced that 2022 will be her last season on the WTA Tour.
