Scrutiny of helicopters in elections is not a new thing, as seen in the case of TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee. Before the elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) had directed all the District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police to keep a strict vigil on the airstrips and helipads. Such inspections are taking place at public and private airstrips across the country to ensure that no inducements are allowed through the air routes.
During the reviews, the Commission continued to emphasize multidisciplinary monitoring of all modes of transport. Check posts and checkpoints for road transport, district magistrates and superintendents of police as well as coast guards for coastal routes, as well as agencies monitoring air routes, helicopters and unscheduled flights will also be checked.
