Before the fourth phase of voting in the Lok Sabha elections 2024, the Election Commission responded to the allegations against it. Mallikarjun Kharge, president of the main opposition party Congress, had raised questions over the delay in releasing the voting figures by blaming the Election Commission. In response, the Election Commission said that Kharge’s allegations are completely baseless. The Election Commission rejected Kharge’s allegations of mismanagement and delay in releasing voting percentage data and termed the allegations as baseless and without facts.
On Kharge’s letter to his allies regarding the voting percentage figures, the Election Commission said that the past and present irresponsible statements of the Congress are disturbing. According to the Election Commission, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s letter written to opposition leaders on the voting percentage figures is an attempt to further the prejudiced discussion.
What did Kharge write?
Mallikarjun Kharge had written a letter to all the leaders included in the alliance of opposition parties asking why the Election Commission takes so much time in releasing the figures after the voting is over. He asked all the leaders to raise their voice against such discrepancies. He wrote that the only goal of the opposition leaders is to protect the culture and constitution of a vibrant democracy. He wrote that we must ensure the independence of the Election Commission of India and make it accountable.
Kharge had written that to protect democracy, it is necessary to ensure independent functioning of the Election Commission. Along with this, he had asked the question whether the delay in the results is not an attempt to influence the final results of the voting. Accusing BJP, he had said that after the trends emerged after the first two phases of voting, BJP leaders and PM Modi are nervous and they can go to any extent to gain power.
