New Delhi: There are many such stories of Lok Sabha elections which very few people would know. In elections, slogans and government’s actions have a great impact on voters. Something similar happened in the year 1977. In the 70s, when Congress was in power at the Center and had a say in almost all the states of the country, it had to pay a heavy price for Sanjay Gandhi’s sterilization policy.
Sanjay Gandhi had set a condition for sterilization
According to the news published in Amar Ujala on March 29, 1976, Sanjay Gandhi had said in the Youth Congress rally in Lucknow that the doors of Youth Congress are open for every person below the age of 37 years. There is only one condition for this that they will have to undergo sterilization of two people every month. This condition of Sanjay Gandhi proved costly for Congress and sent a wrong message to the public. Because of this the youth also started moving away from the party.
wrong message sent to the public
This statement of Sanjay Gandhi spread anger among the public. People started feeling that if Congress comes to government again, people will be forcibly sterilized. What happened was that when the Lok Sabha elections were held in 1977, the Congress had to face a crushing defeat.
Sanjay Gandhi had accused Jan Sangh of being fascist
According to the newspaper, Sanjay Gandhi accused the Jan Sangh (today’s BJP) and other opposition parties of being fascists. The then Chief Minister of UP and Congress leader ND Tiwari, who was present with Sanjay Gandhi in the rally, had praised the policies of Sanjay Gandhi and the Central Government. Sanjay Gandhi was happy to hear Tiwari’s praise but a wrong message was sent to the public and the youth became angry.
