New Delhi. Student union elections are to be held in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on March 22 after four years. During this time, a student had approached the Delhi High Court for relaxation in the age for filing nomination and participating in the election process, but the court refused to grant interim relief on the petition on Monday.
The student had filed an application in the Delhi High Court seeking interim relief till the decision on the petition to increase the maximum age limit for contesting elections is taken. Justice Sachin Dutta observed that the last date for filing nominations has ended and the election process has started. He said, it is not possible to repeat the entire process again and allow the petitioner to contest the elections.

JNUSU elections are to be held on March 22, for which the date for filing nominations was March 15. The results of the student union elections will be declared on March 24. Petitioner Sudhanshu Shekhar had challenged the decision of the JNU Vice Chancellor in the High Court. JNU Vice-Chancellor had rejected the petitioner’s proposal to increase the maximum age limit for contesting student union elections by two years.
Elections were not conducted in the university for more than four years due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. The High Court has issued a notice asking JNU to file a reply to the petition within four weeks.
