New Delhi. India registered a thumping win against Afghanistan in the Super 8 match of T20 World Cup 2024. Team India defeated Afghanistan by 47 runs to register their fourth consecutive win in this World Cup. Team India had earlier registered three wins in the group stage. This is India’s eighth win over Afghanistan in T20 International cricket. Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah played an important role in Team India’s victory. In the match played in Barbados, India had set a target of 182 runs in front of Afghanistan. The Afghanistan team could score only 134 runs. Team India will take on Bangladesh on June 22 in their second match of Super 8.
Afghanistan (IND vs AFG) did not have a good start while chasing the target. Jasprit Bumrah gave the first blow to Afghanistan by dismissing opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Gurbaz was dismissed after scoring 11 runs off 8 balls. Axar Patel gave India the second success by getting Ibrahim Zadran caught by Rohit. Zadran was dismissed after scoring 8 runs off 11 balls. Bumrah sent Zazai to the pavilion on a score of 2 runs while Gulbadin Naib was dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav. Naib was dismissed after scoring 17 runs. Azmatullah Omarzai contributed 26 runs while Najibullah Zadran returned to the pavilion after scoring 19 runs. Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh took 3-3 wickets for India while Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav took 2-2 wickets.

India scored 181 runs for 8 wickets
Earlier, Suryakumar Yadav’s half-century helped India score 181 runs for 8 wickets. Suryakumar scored 53 runs in 28 balls with five fours and three sixes. He took the team to a strong score by adding 60 runs in 37 balls for the fifth wicket with Hardik Pandya (32 runs, 24 balls, three fours, two sixes). Virat Kohli (24) and Rishabh Pant (20) also played useful innings. India managed to score 66 runs in the last six overs.
Rashid and Farooqi took 3 wickets each
For Afghanistan, captain Rashid Khan took three wickets for 26 runs while Fazalhaq Farooqi took three wickets for 33 runs. Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat. The team played with a black band on their arms in memory of former Indian fast bowler David Johnson, who died on Thursday. After a slow start, India lost the wicket of Rohit (08) in the third over itself, who got caught by Rashid while trying to play a big shot on the ball of Fazalhaq Farooqi.
Pant started with a four as soon as he came
Rishabh Pant hit a four on Farooqi as soon as he came while Kohli welcomed Naveen Ul Haq with a straight six. Pant hit three consecutive fours on Nabi. However, he was lucky during the second four when Naveen dropped his catch. India scored 47 runs for one wicket in the power play. However, Pant was caught leg before wicket after missing a straight ball from Rashid in the next over. He scored 20 runs with four fours in 11 balls. Kohli (24) also got caught by Nabi at the long off boundary while trying to hit a high shot in Rashid’s next over.
India’s score reached 100 in the 13th over
Shivam Dubey (10) hit a six off Noor Ahmed while Suryakumar Yadav hit a six off Rashid. Rashid, however, gave India the fourth blow by trapping Dubey leg before wicket. Suryakumar completed India’s century in the 13th over with two fours off Azmatullah Omarzai. Hardik Pandya also showed his attitude by hitting fours off Naveen and Rashid. He also hit a four and a six off consecutive balls of Noor in the 16th over. Suryakumar completed his half-century in just 27 balls with a six and a four off consecutive balls of Farooqi in the next over but got caught by Nabi by waving the next ball in the air.
India also completed 150 runs in this over. Pandya hit a six off Naveen in the next over but then got caught by Omarzai on the boundary. Ravindra Jadeja also got caught by Gulbadin Naib off Farooqi’s ball after scoring seven runs. Axar Patel scored 14 runs with two fours in Naveen’s over before getting run out on the last ball of the innings. India defeated Ireland, Pakistan and USA in the league stage. Team India’s fourth match in the league stage against Canada was washed out due to rain.
