Dhaka Former Bangladesh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chaudhary Abdullah al Mamoon was presented in the International Crime Tribunal (ICT) on Wednesday. He was brought to court to testify in a case related to alleged anti -humanity crimes during the protests in July last year.
According to sources, Al Mamoon was brought from jail and presented to testify against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asdujman Khan Kamal. A three-member bench of ICT, presiding over Tribunal-1 Chairman Justice Golam Murtaza Mazumdar, is registering 13th testimony against Hasina and other two accused.
Last month, local media reported that ICT had framed charges against Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Kamal and former IGP Al Mamoon. After this, news came that Mamoon has been forcibly made a witness to the state.
Reacting to this, Awami League protested. The party alleged that Mamoon has been made a witness by giving “inhuman torture and pressure” and all this is happening under a “false and ridiculous case”. Awami League issued a statement saying, “This is a disgusting attempt to implicate Bangbandhu’s daughter, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and others. The party strongly condemns the act.”
Meanwhile, a Dhaka court has sent former acting Mayor of Ghazipur City Corporation Asadur Rahman Kiron on a three -day remand in the case of attempt to kill businessman Ishtiaq Mahmud during the protests in July last year. At the same time, the court ordered former Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) to be arrested in the same case.
These developments are considered part of the ongoing political campaign on Awami League leaders and officials associated with the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus. Analysts believe that many “fake cases” were flooded against Sheikh Hasina in August 2024, which is part of political vengeance.
