Beijing/Taipei: Tensions between China and Taiwan are at their peak. In such a situation, a former captain of the Chinese Navy surprised the Taiwanese Navy when he reached a pier outside the capital Taipei with his speedboat. Security measures have been increased in Taiwan amid growing tensions with China. Despite this, this intrusion by a Chinese man has been strongly criticized by Taiwan’s top politicians. China considers Taiwan a rebel province. China says that Taiwan should be re-integrated with the mainland, even if force has to be used for this.
What did the former captain say
The former Chinese navy captain has been identified as Ruan (60). Ruan was spotted 11 kilometers off the coast of Tamsui in New Taipei. According to the coast guard, the boat collided with another boat at the pier after entering the Tamsui River headed towards Taipei city, the Hong Kong-based ‘South China Morning Post’ reported on Tuesday. Ruan described himself as a former Chinese navy captain and said he had left Ningde Port in China’s coastal city of Fuzhou a day earlier. However, Taiwan’s coast guard said no food or drink was found on the boat.
Taiwan increased security
According to the Taiwan Coast Guard, Ruan said he was persecuted by Chinese authorities for “making inappropriate statements” and wanted to flee to Taiwan. Ruan has been accused of violating various Taiwanese laws, including the Immigration Act. Taiwan’s Defense Minister Wellington Koo said the possibility that the intrusion of Chinese speedboats could be a strategy by Beijing cannot be ruled out. After this, the Defense Ministry will further strengthen defense measures to prevent the intrusion of ships from China, Taiwan News reported.
