New Delhi. The court today sentenced former IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt in the 1996 NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) case of Palanpur. The Second Additional Sessions Court of Palanpur has sentenced former IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2 lakh in the 1996 NDPS case of Palanpur. After the announcement of the sentence, Sanjeev Bhatt was taken to Palanpur sub-jail in police custody. On Wednesday, Palanpur court had convicted him in the NDPS case. He was produced in Palanpur Sessions Court on Thursday for sentencing.
During this time, Sanjeev Bhatt’s wife Shweta Bhatt was also present there. After the announcement of the punishment he said that we are nowhere in this matter. This is absolutely wrong. This matter has been going on for the last five and a half years. The lawyer was wrongly implicated in the case. This matter came to light after the arrest of Sumersingh Rajpurohit. The case pertains to the seizure, raid and discovery of drugs at Lajwanti Hotel, Palanpur.
Sanjeev Bhatt is accused of falsely implicating a lawyer from Rajasthan in this case. He is in jail since 2018 in that case. At present, Sanjeev Bhatt is in jail these days. Earlier, Bhatt was also sentenced to life imprisonment in the Jamnagar custodial death case. Former IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt and another police officer Praveen Singh Jhala were sentenced to life imprisonment by the Jamnagar district court in the 1990 custodial death case. The court had convicted Praveen Singh Jhala and Bhatt under section 302 of the IPC. A case was registered against eight police personnel.

In this case, the court had sentenced other guilty policemen under sections 323 and 506 of the IPC. This case is from 1990. At that time Sanjeev Bhatt was posted as Additional Superintendent of Police in Jamnagar. He had detained 150 people in the communal riots in Jamjodhpur during the Rath Yatra organized by senior BJP leader LK Advani. One of these persons, Prabhudas Vaishnani, died in the hospital allegedly due to torture. During the Gujarat riots, he came into limelight with the name of Narendra Modi. He came into limelight in April 2011 when he accused then Chief Minister Narendra Modi of being involved in the 2002 Gujarat riots. In this regard, he had also filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court.
