New Delhi. The battle of power that has been going on in Maharashtra for the last 9 days seems to be no less than a scene in a film. Eknath Shinde rebelled under the nose of Uddhav Thackeray and brought such a political earthquake in Maharashtra that hardly anyone would have imagined. In order to retain his power, Thackeray had to chew his nose, after which this political game rested on the arithmetic of seats.
When the matter reached the Supreme Court, after the court order, the floor test would decide whether Uddhav’s government would continue in the state or whether the rebel Eknath Shinde faction would join hands with some other party to write the story of its new in the state. - Legislative council elections were held on 20 June. Soon after this election, senior Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde suddenly passed away. After this no one could get to know about his location.
- After this news came out that Shinde is staying in Surat city of BJP ruled state Gujarat with 11 MLAs.
- Seeing this ruckus growing, Uddhav Thackeray called a meeting with all his MLAs. After this 10 to 12 more MLAs of the party were not seen in Maharashtra.
- Later a decision was taken to remove Eknath Shinde from the post of whip of Shiv Sena party.
- Shiv Sena was afraid that more of its MLAs might not be lost, so it kept the rest of its MLAs in different hotels in Mumbai.
- Here Eknath Shinde put forth the matter of breaking the MVA alliance with Uddhav Thackeray and forming the government with the Bharatiya Janata Party.
- Along with this, Shinde also claimed that he has the support of more than 40 MLAs.
- Shinde himself was needed during this period along with more than 37 MLAs (two-thirds of the total strength of 55) to avoid disqualification under anti-defection laws in India.
- After this Shinde reached Guwahati in Assam on 22 June with 40 MLAs.
- On the same evening, Uddhav Thackeray announced that he was ready to step down as the leader of the alliance and the chief minister.
- After this announcement, the Thackeray family along with the family left the official Chief Minister’s residence Varsha and shifted to their private residence Matoshree.
- In the midst of this ongoing political battle between Thackeray and Shinde, senior Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut targeted the BJP fiercely. Raut accused the BJP of revolting within the Shiv Sena and trying to topple the MVA coalition government.
- On June 23, the rebel 37 MLAs elected Shinde as the leader of their Shiv Sena Legislature Party.
- The next day, June 24, a petition was filed on behalf of the Shiv Sena against the rebel MLAs. In which it was demanded that Narhari Jirwal, Deputy Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, disqualify 16 MLAs from the Shinde camp. After this, Jirwal met Shiv Sena leaders and later also met the Advocate General of Maharashtra for legal opinion.
- Here two independent MLAs supporting BJP brought a no-confidence motion against Jirwal. However, this no-confidence vote signed by 34 MLAs was rejected by Jirwal as the petition was sent through an anonymous e-mail.
- Eknath Shinde reportedly met Home Minister Amit Shah and former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Vadodara, Gujarat on the same day. If sources are to be believed, in this meeting, the merger or alliance framework was discussed to topple the MVA government.
- On June 26, Shinde approached the Supreme Court over the rejection of the no-confidence vote against the deputy speaker.
- The next day on 27 June, the Supreme Court of India posted the next hearing for it on 11 July and also directed Deputy Speaker Jirwal to file a detailed affidavit regarding the no-confidence motion against him.
- Sources informed on 28 June that Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray also met Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis twice to save his government from falling.
- Meanwhile, it also came to light that BJP is working behind the scenes to topple Thackeray’s government in Maharashtra and form its government. According to sources, the BJP and the Eknath Shinde faction have also held talks about a possible cabinet. Where there will be 28 cabinet ministers in BJP. In which 18 cabinet ministers and 10 state ministers will be included. If sources are to be believed, the Shinde faction can be given six cabinet posts and six ministers of state.
- Here former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis along with the BJP delegation met the Governor and demanded a floor test.
- The Supreme Court, hearing the petition of the rebel MLAs, ordered a floor test on June 30. However, shortly after the court’s decision, Thackeray surprised everyone and announced his resignation from the post of Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
