Bucharest. German President Frank Walter Steinmeier claimed during a visit to Bucharest that Germany’s reliance on Russian energy resources had reduced significantly. Germany’s dependence on Russian oil currently stands at 15 percent, reports Xinhua news agency. Steinmeier told a joint news conference with his Romanian counterpart Klaus Iohannis on Wednesday.
The Romanian president said his country supports the European Commission’s proposed ban on Russian oil. Which will be implemented within a phased period of six months.
Iohannis said that authorities in Bucharest are now working on permanent solutions that could be implemented soon.
Romania wants to play an active role in achieving the EU’s strategic objectives regarding natural gas supply, he said.
The two presidents also discussed other issues. These included issues such as aid provided to Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees, support for the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia joining the European Union, and Romania’s expectations for Schengen membership.
