New Delhi. The Department of Telecommunications has started cracking down on those who cheat mobile users by sending messages on mobile. The department has started blocking such numbers along with blocking mobile phones used in such activities. The Department of Telecommunications (DOT) has launched ‘Chakshu’ portal two months ago to deal with complaints related to fraud.
According to official sources, since the launch of the portal, the department has blacklisted 52 entities involved in sending malicious and malicious SMS. Besides, 348 mobile handsets have also been blocked at all India level. Apart from this, 10,834 suspicious mobile numbers have been marked for re-verification.

Block both number and phone
In response to a technology professional’s comments on SMS-related fraud on social media platform ‘X’, the department said the mobile number mentioned has been blocked. Besides, the mobile phone associated with it has also been blocked. The Department of Telecommunications in its reply said, the mobile number and 20 mobile handsets linked to it have been blocked due to cyber crime/financial fraud. If you notice any such incident, please immediately report suspected fraud on the Chakshu portal. According to official sources, the Department of Telecommunications has disabled 700 SMS content ‘templates’.

The department has flagged 10,834 suspicious mobile numbers to telecom operators for re-verification, the source said. 8,272 mobile connections have been disconnected for failing to re-verify by April 30, 2024. Apart from this, the Department of Telecommunications has also blocked 1.58 lakh unique mobile phone identification numbers (IMEIs) due to their involvement in cyber crimes and financial frauds or mobile connections taken on fake or forged documents.
1.66 crore connections were disconnected
According to official data, till April 30 this year, the department has disconnected a total of 1.66 crore mobile connections. Of these, 30.14 lakh have been deducted on the basis of user feedback and 53.78 lakh have been deducted for exceeding the individual limit of purchasing new SIM cards. Most of the connections disconnected are those committing fraud or not completing KYC.
