new Delhi. National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Rekha Sharma on Tuesday welcomed the Karnataka High Court’s decision on the hijab ban, saying students should follow the dress code prescribed by the administration inside an educational institution. Welcoming the court’s decision, the NCW President said, “Girls and women have the right to wear whatever they like and nothing should come in the way of their freedom of choice, but inside an educational institution, I think Students should follow the dress code prescribed by the administration.”
Earlier, a special bench of the Karnataka High Court had dismissed all the petitions seeking a direction to allow wearing of hijab in classrooms.
The High Court also said that “the wearing of hijab is not a mandatory part of Islam. The uniform directive is constitutional and students cannot object to it.”
The NCW chief further said that the decision is now expected to bring an end to the ongoing dispute and allow girls to go back to school and continue their education.
What started as a protest by six girl students of Udupi Pre-University Girls College in Karnataka turned into a major crisis.
Security has been tightened across the state as a precautionary measure on the day of the verdict on Tuesday. A holiday was declared for schools and colleges in Dakshina Kannada, Kalaburagi and Shivamogga districts.
Most of the districts have imposed prohibitory orders in the vicinity of educational institutions. Bengaluru Police Commissioner Kamal Pant has issued prohibitory orders prohibiting protests, gatherings and gatherings across the city for seven days from March 15.
