Market. A major accident occurred on the Chandigarh-Manali highway in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh in the early hours of Sunday. A tourist bus overturned uncontrollably near Mandi city at around 4:00 am, in which 31 passengers were injured. This bus was going towards Kasol (Kullu-Manali).
The condition of two of the injured is extremely critical, who has been referred to Nerchouk Medical College immediately. Six other passengers suffered serious injuries, while the rest were discharged from the hospital after first aid.
Initial investigation is said to be the cause of the accident at a fast pace. Mandi Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sagar Chandra said, “The bus driver seems to be a major reason for the accident. We have started a thorough investigation into the case and the driver is being questioned.”
The police have also called the forensic team on the spot to find out the exact causes of the accident. Apart from this, the owner and operator of the bus are also being questioned to assess the technical status and maintenance of the vehicle.
The local administration and police came into action as soon as the accident was reported. The rescue team immediately reached the spot and the injured were admitted to the nearest hospitals. Local people also contributed significantly to the rescue work.
Traffic on the highway was affected for some time after the accident, but the police and administration soon controlled the situation. The incident has once again questioned road safety and negligence of drivers in the hilly areas.
Such accidents remain a matter of concern during the tourist season in Himachal Pradesh. At the same time, the police have appealed to the passengers to take precautions during the road trip and encourage drivers to follow the speed limit.
