New Delhi . The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has sought a factual report from the Maharashtra government on the arrest of Independent MP Navneet Rana and allegations of alleged inhuman treatment at Khar police station in Mumbai. According to Home Ministry officials, the move of the ministry comes after the Lok Sabha Privileges and Ethics Committee had earlier sought a report from the Union Home Ministry from the state government.
On Monday, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla had also sought details from the Maharashtra government on the arrest of MP Navneet Rana in Mumbai within 24 hours.
Following his arrest by the Mumbai Police, Rana wrote a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker saying he was treated inhumanely by the police after his ‘illegal’ arrest on Saturday.
In his letter, the independent MLA has accused the Mumbai Police of not even providing him drinking water while in custody and misbehaving with him on the basis of caste.
Navneet Rana and her husband and Independent MLA Ravi Rana were arrested from their Mumbai residence on Saturday. The action was taken after the Rana couple had announced to read ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ outside Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s house in Bandra.
The announcement had created a huge controversy and Shiv Sena workers protested outside his house in Mumbai.
The announcement of the chanting of ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ was apparently aimed at putting pressure on the Shiv Sena-led state government over the issue of use of loudspeakers at places of worship.
The Rana couple have been booked by the Mumbai Police under various sections of the IPC and were sent to 14-day judicial custody by the Khar Court on Sunday. His bail plea and the quashing of the FIR were dismissed by the Bombay High Court on Monday.
