New Delhi. On Sunday, after taking over as the 25th Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar said he was honored to be given the responsibility of leading one of the finest institutions conferred by the Indian Constitution. He further said that during the last 70 years, the Election Commission has done a lot for our citizens to conduct free and fair elections, ensure correctness of electoral rolls, prevent malpractices and enhance the quality of our elections.
He said that while the Commission will follow time-tested and democratic methods of consultation and consensus building to bring about any major reforms that are accounted for under the Constitution, the ECI will not shy away from tough decisions.
Kumar also said that technology will further be made the key tool for simplification of processes and practices for better election management and conduction and simplification of processes and practices to ease voter services.
Kumar is serving as Election Commissioner since September 1, 2020 and during his tenure as Election Commissioner, Bihar Assembly Elections in 2020 amid COVID in March, Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, West in April 2021 Elections have also been held for Bengal and more recently in Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh in early 2022.
Sushil Chandra retired on 14 May after completing his term as the Chief Election Commissioner of India.
