The Supreme Court on Monday restored the bail of YouTuber Sattai Duraimurugan. Duraimurugan is accused of posting videos containing derogatory comments on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin. Duraimurugan had filed a petition in the Supreme Court after the High Court canceled his interim bail. The Supreme Court, while canceling the decision of the High Court, said that if before the elections we start putting all the people accusing YouTube behind the bars, then imagine how many people will go to jail?
initial decision reinstated
The Supreme Court emphasized that Duraimurugan had been on bail for more than two and a half years without abusing his freedom through protest or expression of views. The bench decisively set aside the High Court order canceling Duraimurugan’s bail and reinstated the initial decision to grant it.
Option to cancel bail available
The Supreme Court said that we did not find any basis for canceling the bail. In this way, those refusing to grant bail cancel the order of the High Court and restore the previous order of granting bail. The Supreme Court also said that if future circumstances require such action, the option of cancellation of bail remains available.
High Court canceled bail in 2022
Let us inform that in November 2021, Madras High Court had granted bail to Sattai Duraimurugan. In June 2022, the Madurai bench of Madras High Court had canceled the bail granted to the YouTuber. He had made some derogatory comments against MK Stalin in violation of an undertaking given to the court. After this, Sattai moved the apex court against the High Court order.
