Rafah The situation has become extremely critical after the Israeli army’s control and bombing in Rafah, Gaza. Providing supplies to the Palestinians has become the biggest challenge here. Aid workers are struggling to deliver food and other supplies to thousands of displaced Palestinians. Whereas Israel says that its campaign in Rafah is limited. In the south, two main crossings near Gaza city are closed. The UN agency for Palestinian refugees said 1.3 million Palestinians were taking refuge there before the operation began in Rafah and 3.6 million people have fled the area in the past week.
Israel has described Rafah as the last stronghold of the extremist group Hamas and has launched its campaign in the area, ignoring warnings from the US and other allies that any major operation could be disastrous for civilians. Meanwhile, Hamas has regrouped in some parts of Gaza that Israel had previously destroyed with heavy bombing and ground operations. UN World Food Program (WFP) spokeswoman Abir Itefa said 38 trucks carrying flour had arrived from the western Erez crossing. It is the second entry point to northern Gaza. Israel had announced the opening of the crossing on Sunday. But for the past week, no food has reached the two main crossings into southern Gaza.
Bombing intensifies in Rafah
The Rafah crossing with Egypt has been closed since Israeli troops captured it a week ago. Since last week, the Israeli army has intensified bombing and other operations in Rafah. Also, people have been ordered to move from some parts of the city. Israel says it is a limited operation focused on eliminating tunnels and other infrastructure along the Egyptian border. Itefah said WFP is distributing food from its remaining stockpile to areas of Khan Yunis and Deir Balah in northern Gaza. (AP)
