‘Congress party was on the verge of collapse’
Priyanka Gandhi said in the election rally that after 7 years of Rajiv Gandhi’s death, she (Sonia Gandhi) felt that the Congress party was in crisis. At that time it seemed as if another election was coming. BJP could emerge and Congress party was about to break. Many leaders would come to her (Sonia Gandhi) and say that you should come into politics. I was his daughter and had seen many of his troubles. I refused, I said don’t come into politics, these people will use you, something will happen to you. I said, leave the party, there is no need, the party will be taken care of, someone will take care. But mother did not listen. My mother told me that there is a picture of your father in my room. I will not be able to see this, if I turn away today, if I do not move forward for the party, then what answer will I have to them and myself.
Priyanka Gandhi remembered an old incident, became emotional
Priyanka Gandhi said that mother came forward and it was clear that she had to contest elections from Amethi. Amethi was my father’s workplace. To tell the truth, when it was decided that she would contest elections from Amethi, one evening she asked me how Priyanka would do. I never contested elections. I said, mother, I will give you this by contesting the elections. Don’t come to Amethi, I will take care of Amethi. I said this because when my father was martyred, I was angry and sad. I felt like no one could understand my sorrow. But then something happened. After his last rites, we came to Allahabad for immersion of ashes. Our train passed through Amethi Rae Bareli. I remember looking out the window and seeing people crying bitterly. The sorrow that was in my heart. The people of Amethi and Rae Bareli were facing the same pain.
