Vienna. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Rafael Mariano Grossi has said he will lead a campaign to ensure the safety of Ukraine’s Chernobyl nuclear plant.
China’s news agency Xinhua told that Grossi has tweeted about this subject. “This will be the first mission of a series of nuclear security campaigns in Ukraine,” he wrote.
Grossi also told reporters in Vienna that the IAEA’s Chernobyl mission would begin very soon.
The IAEA chief has recently returned from a trip to Ukraine and Russia. During this, he discussed the safety of nuclear plants with officials from both sides.
The IAEA said on Thursday that Russian troops occupied by the Chernobyl plant were going back and handed over responsibility for the plant to Ukraine.
Then at a news conference on Friday, Grossi said he had not asked Russian officials why they were leaving Chernobyl.
He said that reports could not yet be confirmed that Russian troops were leaving the plant due to radiation exposure. Grossi said the radiation level around the plant is normal.
Grossi said the radiation levels inside the plant had increased comparatively due to the movement of very heavy vehicles during the occupation of the plant.
The Ukrainian administration says Russia has been in control of the nuclear plant ever since it attacked it.
The plant is located just 110 km from the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and is known to be the cause of the 1986 nuclear radiation accident.
