Pankaj Singta/Shimla. Premature children, i.e. children born before the completion of 9 months of pregnancy, are at risk of many diseases. In fact, the child’s organs develop during the entire nine months in the mother’s womb. But due to premature birth, many organs do not develop completely. There may also be a situation of putting such newborns on ventilator. In such a situation, the retinas of the eyes are not able to form in children, due to which their timely treatment is necessary. If you don’t do this, there is a risk of losing your eyesight.
Dr. Praveen Panwar, working associate professor at IGMC Shimla, while talking to Local 18, said that eye disease occurs in premature babies, it is called Retinopathy of Premature Baby. The normal period of a child’s time in the mother’s womb is 9 months. Sometimes due to some diseases the child is born before 9 months. Due to this, many types of diseases can occur in children. Retinopathy of premature baby is one such disease.
What is retinal detachment?
In pre-mature children, if the retina is not treated in time, then gradually their retina starts disintegrating. This is called retinal detachment. If the eyes of such children are not treated, they may lose their eyesight for life. Such a condition is called total retinal detachment. There is no cure for this. This treatment is not possible even through surgery. Therefore, eye checkup of premature babies is very important within 30 days of birth.
How are premature babies treated?
If the retina of a premature baby is not fully formed, then the doctor first stages the disease for its treatment. If the disease is of early stage, then follow-up of the child is taken in one or two weeks. If the disease is found in the child within 30 days, then laser treatment has to be done in this situation. By laser treatment, the already formed retina of the child’s eye can be saved and he can be saved from retinal detachment.
