Medication can make heatwaves worse: For the last two months, heat has caused severe havoc in the country. The mercury is touching its record level every day. Many people are falling prey to heat wave every day. But you will be surprised to know that people who take certain types of medicines are at a higher risk of feeling more heat. Actually, about 2 billion people in the world suffer from blood pressure. Most of these people have to take medicines. But blood pressure medicines can increase the risk of heat wave manifold. Similarly, if people suffering from allergies or mental problems take medicines for these diseases, then they are at the highest risk of heat wave.
Why are those who take BP medicine at greater risk?
According to the New York Times report, American Pharmacist Association professor Dr. Alison Hill said that doctors advise patients of kidney disease, heart failure, high blood pressure to take diuretic medicines so that the salt and water in the body can be eliminated quickly. This causes the urge to urinate immediately, which removes excess water from the body quickly. In this situation, blood pressure remains under control. But it also has a disadvantage. Taking diuretic medicine causes dehydration. This causes a deficiency of potassium or salt in the body, which also reduces electrolytes in the body. Due to the deficiency of electrolytes, it becomes difficult to control the temperature in the body. This is the reason why such persons feel very hot in the summer season and they are most at risk of heatwave when they go out.
Dehydration even from anti-depressant medication
Dr. Michael Redlener, Medical Director of Mount Sinai West Hospital, said that angiotensin enzyme inhibitors are given to patients of high blood pressure. It increases symptoms like fainting, falling, vomiting in the heat. Not only this, thirst is also reduced in this. Therefore, the body does not realize when there is a shortage of water in the body. Such people sweat a lot. Blood pressure medicine disturbs the balance of electrolytes in the body. The same happens with anti-depression medicines like haloperidol, olanzapine and risperidone. People taking such medicines have high body temperature. Some anti-depression medicines cause excessive sweating and frequent urination. This is the reason why people taking these medicines need to be more cautious during the summer days.
