Bad news has come out of the country’s most prestigious engineering institute IIT Bombay. Last night a student of the institute committed suicide. According to the information received, the student committed suicide around 4.30 in the morning. The student who committed suicide was studying in the second year of Masters in Engineering. He was taken to Rajawadi Hospital in Mumbai. Where the doctors declared him dead. The age of the deceased student is said to be 27 years. The student has committed suicide by jumping from the seventh floor of his hostel. Police also found a suicide note from the spot. The student was in depression and was undergoing treatment. The boy has not held anyone responsible for the suicide in his suicide note.

Let us inform that during the Parliament session, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had said that between 2014 and 2021, 122 students committed suicide in IITs, IIMs, Central Universities, IESC and other higher educational institutions. During this period 34 students in Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), 5 students in Indian Institute of Management (IEM), 9 students at Indian Institute of Science (IESC) and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, 37 students in University and Central National Information Technology University suicides have been reported in the institute.
The Minister informed that several initiatives have been taken by the Government of India and the University Grants Commission (UGC) to prevent incidents of harassment and discrimination against students. He said that the University Grants Commission Regulations, 2019 have been made to protect the interest of the students. The Education Minister said that apart from this, the Ministry has taken several steps to reduce the academic stress like friendly reading for students, introduction of technical education in regional languages etc. He said that under the Government of India’s initiative called Psychoanalysis, a comprehensive level of psychological support has been launched to provide psychological support for the mental and emotional well-being of students, teachers and families during the COVID pandemic. So that this kind of incident can be prevented.
