BJP MP Subramanian Swamy has again taunted PM Modi regarding China. His question to the government was that the announcement was made in Japan on the previous day that QUAD has been formed to oppose the expansionist policies of China. But the Government of India should tell that if this organization is formed against China, then what are we doing in BRICS.
This is not the first time that Swamy is attacking the Modi government. Earlier, regarding BRICS, he had accused PM Modi of reducing India’s self-respect. He wrote in the tweet that the world is whispering that there are actually three people in BRICS – Saheb, Bibi and Ghulam. Modi has lowered India’s self-respect by agreeing to sit with Saheb China and Bibi Russia.
What is QUAD and BRICS
QUAD was formally launched as an informal partnership after the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The four countries then came together to provide humanitarian and disaster management assistance to the affected areas. However, the organization remained dormant for almost a decade. It was revived in 2017. This reflects the changing attitude in the region regarding the growing influence of China. The Quad leaders held their first formal summit in 2021.
It is announced in Japan yesterday that QUAD is to counter Chinese expansionism. Then why India is a part of BRICS? To be a Bat of Panchatantra?

On the other hand, BRICS is a group of five emerging economies of the world. This includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Before joining this economic group of South Africa, it was called BRIC. The first summit-level official meeting of BRIC countries took place on 16 June 2009 in Yekateringburg, Russia. However, before this, the Foreign Ministers of BRIC countries had a meeting in May 2008.
Targeting China in joint statement
Keep in mind that the ongoing Quad countries meeting in Tokyo has ended today. This meeting lasted for about two hours. America, Japan, Australia and India attended the meeting. In this, issues ranging from the Russo-Ukraine war to the dictatorship of China were raised. All countries talked about restoring peace in the Indo-Pacific. “We strongly oppose any coercive, provocative or unilateral action that seeks to alter the status quo and increase tensions,” the Quad joint statement said. Targeting China, it said that we will abide by the international law reflected in the United Nations Conference in the East and South China Sea.
