New Delhi. The current geopolitical situation requires India to prepare its armed forces for short-term and long-term standoffs. India has an ongoing border dispute with both China and Pakistan. Indian Air Force Chief V.R. Chaudhary said this on Thursday. Addressing a seminar here, Air Chief Marshal Chaudhry quoted the eminent Chinese strategic thinker as saying that “Sun Tzu rightly said: ‘The line between chaos and order lies in logistics.’ Understanding what is meant by logistics varies in military and civilian domains, however, both domains assume that materials or services in logistics are in the right quantity, in the right condition, at the right place and at the right time. A commander who understands logistics can push a military machine to the limit without risking total breakdown.”
He said that in the evolving geopolitical scenario along with the recent experiences of the Indian Air Force, it is imperative for the force to be operationally and logistically responsive at all times.
He said, “The current geopolitical situation requires the Indian Air Force to be prepared for rapid and short duration operations in a short span of time. Logistics support in such a scenario would be extremely challenging as we have a vast and varied inventory. “
“The way forward will be a serviceability-linked inventory management system,” he said.
“Flexible stocking policies along with modern forecasting techniques will help in understanding the demand for commodities on an on-going basis.”
“We should also review our procurement strategies to reduce lead times to supplies and reduce supply chain pre-problems,” he added.
Air Chief Marshal Chaudhry said, “We will need to be prepared for short sharp battles as well as a prolonged standoff similar to what we are seeing in eastern Ladakh.”
Both of these contingencies would require bridging resources and meeting transportation, he said.
