There are about 160 ‘Deemed to be Universities’ ie ‘Deemed’ universities in the country. The words ‘Deemed to be University’ or ‘Sum’ will soon be removed from the names of these universities. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has constituted a committee to review the UGC (Deemed University Institution) regulations. This committee will submit its report to the commission in a few weeks.
UGC President M. Jagdish Kumar said that we are reviewing the Deemed University Regulations. We have about 160 Deemed Universities here but the students who pass out from these universities cannot say that they have passed from the university. Because their university is called ‘deemed’ university. We want to remove this word.
We would call everyone a university. This will greatly benefit the students. Kumar told that when our students studying from deemed universities go abroad for job or further studies, they are not able to say that they have completed their studies from the university. Nobody likes to say Deemed University. That’s why we will soon remove the word even in the name of deemed universities. That is, the deemed universities will also be called universities.
Apart from this, we are also reviewing the Private University Regulations, the President of UGC said. A committee has been formed for this also. He told that in our country a large number of students study in private universities. So we have to strengthen private universities also. Kumar said that the quality of education, admission process, recruitment of teachers etc. in private universities also have to be done according to the standards. It is worth noting that two years ago, all deemed universities were forbidden by the UGC to use only the word university in their names. An order of the Supreme Court was cited in this regard.
