PM Narendra Modi 2002 Gujarat Riots Case Clean Chit: The Supreme Court has dismissed the petition filed against the SIT report giving clean chit to the then Chief Minister of the state Narendra Modi and many others in the 2002 Gujarat riots. Let us inform that this petition was filed on behalf of Zakia Jafri. The Supreme Court has upheld the investigation report of the SIT. Zakia Jafri, who filed the petition, is the wife of former Congress MP Ahsan Jafri.
Earlier on 9 December 2021, the Supreme Court had reserved its decision on the petition of Zakia Jafri. It was heard by a bench of Justice AM Khanwilkar, Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice CT Ravikumar.
Significantly, during the 2002 Gujarat riots, Zakia Jafri’s husband and then Congress MLA Ehsan Jafri was killed in the Gulberg Society massacre. On which Zakia Jafri filed a petition in the Supreme Court and challenged the report of the ISIT.
What was the matter: In 2002, a day after a coach of the Sabarmati Express caught fire at Godhra in Gujarat, 68 people were killed in the Gulbarg Society in the Ahmedabad riots on February 28, 2002. In which former MP Ehsan Jafri was also involved.
The SIT probing the case had filed a closure report on February 8, 2012, giving clean chit to Narendra Modi and 63 others. In which senior government officials were also involved. It was said in this report that there was no evidence to prosecute the accused. Against this report, Zakia Jafri had moved the High Court. Which was rejected by the Gujarat High Court in 2017.
After the Gujarat High Court, Zakia filed a petition against the report of the SIT in the Supreme Court, but on June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court also rejected the appeal of Zakia Jafri, considering the report of the SIT to be correct.
