1 to 2 crore people displaced due to partition on religious grounds, estimated to have killed about 10 to 20 lakh people
New Delhi, Aug 14 (IANS) | Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that August 14 will be observed as ‘Bhajan Vibhiska Memorial Day’ or ‘Partition Horse Remembrance Day’ in memory of the struggles and sacrifices of our people. The Prime Minister hoped that ‘this will not only inspire us to eliminate the poison of discrimination, enmity and ill-will, but it will also strengthen unity, social harmony and human sensibilities’.
He tweeted, “The pain of partition of the country can never be forgotten. Due to hatred and violence lakhs of our sisters and brothers were displaced and even lost their lives. In memory of the struggle and sacrifice of those people 14 It has been decided to celebrate August as ‘Vibhishan Memorial Day’.

He further said, “This day of ‘Bhijan Vibhishika Memorial Day’ will not only inspire us to eliminate the poison of discrimination, animosity and ill-will, but it will also strengthen unity, social harmony and human sensibilities.” It is estimated that between 10 and 20 lakh people died during the partition of the country in 1947. The most violent conflicts were centered around Punjab, where the Muslim population of East Punjab was forcibly expelled there. Partition displaced between 1 and 20 million people on religious lines, creating a huge refugee crisis.
