A recent study on Corona found that, contrary to popular belief, during the first wave of Corona, most of the deaths occurred among young people and not the elderly. Similarly, there were more deaths of female patients than males. The first phase of corona study suggests that younger patients with co-morbidities had a higher risk of death. The study is published June 25, 2022 in Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, Springer Nature.
Researchers from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital conducted a study on patients hospitalized from 8 April 2020 to 4 October 2020 (Phase II) to observe the relationship between diabetes, hypertension and kidney disease in 2,586 corona patients. So that the prognosis and mortality rate of corona infection in admitted patients can be analyzed.
According to Dr Rashmi Rana, consultant and author of the hospital’s research department, the study also found that women had a relatively higher mortality rate than men, except for hypertensive patients. According to co-author Dr Vivek Ranjan, the study showed that the risk of severity of corona infection in young patients with underlying co-morbidities was found to be relatively higher as well as the mortality rate compared to elderly patients with the same disease. According to co-author Dr Atul Gogia, Senior Consultant, Department of Medicine, malignant kidney patients in the study were at higher risk of hypertension and diabetes followed by disease progression, complications and mortality.
