Sources said that the Coast Guard has diverted two ships to the spot for rescue operation. A Dornier aircraft flying from Daman also downed a lifeboat in the area. The accident site is located 7 nautical miles inside the Arabian Sea from Mumbai.

Six ONGC personnel were on board the helicopter, and one belonged to a contractor working for the company. The helicopter was forced to land using floaters attached to it, which carry personnel and material from shore to the coastal area. It is not known what caused the helicopter to make an emergency landing.
ONGC has several rigs and installations in the Arabian Sea which are used to produce oil and gas from reservoirs located below sea level.
