New Delhi. A new vaccine effective on COVID-19 being developed by the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru and biotech start-up Mynvax will not spoil even in heat up to 100 degrees Celsius. According to a study on mice, the new vaccine has shown strong antibody response against COVID variants including Delta and Omicron.
The heat-tolerant COVID-19 vaccine can be stored at 37 °C for four weeks and at 100 °C for up to 90 minutes.
This vaccine uses a part of the viral spike protein, called the receptor-binding domain. This allows the virus to attach to the host cell to infect.
The latest study, recently published in the peer-reviewed journal Viruses, assessed vaccinated mice for efficacy against major coronavirus variants, including Delta and Omicron.
The study found that mice immunized with different formulations of the vaccine had higher levels of antibodies, which neutralize the SARS-CoV-2 variant VIC31 (reference strain), the delta and Omicron variants of the coronavirus.
According to the study, an average 14.4-fold reduction in neutralization against the Omicron variant was observed for one formulation of the Minvax vaccine and 16.5-fold for the other formulation as compared to VIC31.
