How does it work?
IOC director SSV Ramkumar says that this chulha (Surya Nutan) stove is different from solar cooker, as it does not need to be kept in the sun. This solar cooking stove ‘Surya Nutan’ has been developed by the Research and Development Department of Indian Oil, Faridabad. It can always be kept in the kitchen, its one cable uses the solar energy captured through PV panels placed outside or on the roof.
It collects solar energy and converts it into heat through a specially designed heating element. Stores thermal energy in scientifically designed thermal batteries and re-converts the energy for use in indoor cooking. This captured energy can be used to prepare two meals a day for a family of four.
In the information given by them, it has been told that by using this stove, 3 units of carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced for every one kg of LPG saved. Presently the prototype of its solar stove is being tested at 60 locations with high solar intensity including Ladakh. Once the testing work is completed, its commercial production will be started.
Price will be more expensive than common gas stoves
It has been told by IOC that at present the price of a gas stove comes close to Rs 18,000 to Rs 30,000. But if 2-3 lakh units are produced on a large scale and there is some government support, then its cost can be as low as Rs 10,000 to Rs 12,000 per unit. The stove can be operated comfortably for ten years without maintenance. It doesn’t have a traditional battery, which needs to be replaced. Also the life of the solar panel is 20 years.
Production can start for common people in 2-3 months
This solar stove using solar energy can be used for all the work related to cooking. In this water can be used for boiling, frying and baking bread. Right now it may take another 2-3 months to launch it commercially.
Expansion
Veteran oil marketing company Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has come up with a stove for indoor cooking using solar energy. There is no need to keep it in the sun for cooking using this stove. This different type of solar stove has been named ‘Surya Nutan’. The biggest feature of this solar stove is that you have to pay only once to buy it, once you buy it, it will not cost any more, apart from this there is no separate maintenance charge. This stove is being seen as an alternative to fossil fuel. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has organized a function at his residence and got a demo of this stove where he has made a three-course meal on this stove.
