Kolkata Knight Riders suffered their first defeat in IPL 2022 at the hands of Royal Challengers Bangalore. In this thrilling match played at the DY Patil Stadium, RCB won by just three wickets with four balls to spare. Batting first, KKR had set a target of 129 runs in front of RCB, which the team chased in the last over. KKR captain Shreyas Iyer got the 19th and crucial over of the match done by young Venkatesh Iyer instead of getting Andre Russell. Venkatesh spent 10 runs from this over. After the match, Iyer explained the reason for his decision.
Shreyas Iyer said “It was a great match. When we came to bowl after a low score, I told the team that today’s match can determine our character. The way we fight, it shows our mindset. We wanted to get a few wickets early but the opposition batsmen played well in the middle overs. They got out of difficult situations early. We are proud that we took this match to the last over.”
He further added, “In the end, I decided to go with Venky (Venkatesh Iyer) as he also has good experience bowling at international level. You need to support him especially at the start of the tournament. It’s really good. It is important that they gain confidence as soon as possible.”

During this over from Venkatesh Iyer, KKR’s fielder made a big mistake, which he had to bear the brunt of defeat. In fact, in the second ball of Venkatesh Iyer’s over, Dinesh Karthik and Harshal Patel had a great run-out opportunity due to a disturbance in the coordination, but the players could not take advantage of this opportunity.
