Maharashtra Sports Minister Sunil Kedar on Saturday (February 26) said that he expects spectators to be allowed for IPL matches to be held in Maharashtra from March 26. The league matches of the 15th season of the tournament will be held at four venues. The matches will be played at Wankhede Stadium, Cricket Club of India (Braborne Stadium), DY Patil Stadium and Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Gahunje, Pune.
Sunil Kedar said, “I hope we will have a better environment with the way the cases of corona are decreasing continuously. We hope that when the IPL matches are held, the atmosphere will be such that everyone will be allowed to go to the stadium. This will boost the morale of the players. People have been sitting in homes for one and a half to two years. It will be a great opportunity where people can come together.”
20-20 matches will be played at Wankhede and DY Patil. At the same time, 15-15 matches will be held in the stadiums of Brabourne and Pune. Maharashtra Sports Minister further said, “It is our good fortune that all the (league) matches will be held in Pune and Mumbai. As the Sports Minister of the state, I am thankful to BCCI. As far as the spectators going to the stadium, apart from bio-bubbles and restrictions, we will decide on it according to international rules.
Earlier in the day, Kedar’s ministerial colleague and Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray visited the Wankhede Stadium to review the preparations. A source with knowledge of the matter said, “The audience will be allowed as per the guidelines set by the Maharashtra government and initially it will be 40 per cent. If the corona situation remains under control and there is a decline in the cases then the stadium may also look full.
