Iran Hospital Fire: A fire broke out in a hospital in northern Iran, killing nine patients. State media gave this information on Tuesday. State television reported that this tragic incident took place in Qaim Hospital in Rasht city, about 330 kilometers (about 205 miles) northwest of the capital Tehran. The fire broke out around 1:30 am local time on Monday night. Six women and three men died in this accident.
This caused the fire
Shahram Momeni, the city’s fire department chief, said on state TV that the blaze was caused by an electrical short circuit in the basement, where the intensive care unit is located. Momeni said emergency workers rescued more than 140 people trapped there, patients and hospital staff, and admitted 120 of them to other medical facilities. He said an investigation into the incident had been ordered. A video posted online showed smoke billowing from the hospital about midnight. (AP)
