Is Cholesterol Good For You: Many times you must have heard that bad cholesterol harms our heart health. You must have also heard about good cholesterol. It is generally believed that bad cholesterol can prove to be harmful for health, whereas good cholesterol is considered good. Now the question is, is good cholesterol really good for the body? Let’s try to know the truth about this from the doctor.
Dr. Vanita Arora, Senior Consultant, Cardiology Department, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, told AnyTV That our body has high density lipoprotein (HDL), which is called good cholesterol. While low density lipoprotein (LDL) is called bad cholesterol. Good cholesterol is considered good for the body, while bad cholesterol harms health. Especially cholesterol level affects the cardiovascular system. If the amount of bad cholesterol in the blood increases, then it increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.
Dr. Vanita Arora told that bad cholesterol in our blood is considered normal if it is less than 100 mg/dL. Talking about good cholesterol, it should be 50 mg/dL or more in the blood. Apart from this, the total cholesterol in the blood should be less than 200 mg/dL. Cholesterol is a wax-like substance in the blood, which if increases beyond limit, gets deposited in the blood arteries and starts creating obstruction in the blood supply to the heart and brain. This can lead to heart attack and stroke. Therefore, one should not be careless about cholesterol and should get it checked from time to time.
Is good cholesterol really good?
Cardiologists say that high density lipoprotein (HDL) is considered beneficial for health. If the level of good cholesterol in the blood is normal, then it helps in removing the dirty cholesterol deposited in the blood arteries from the body through the stool. Good cholesterol prevents plaque from accumulating in the arteries and helps in maintaining better blood supply. This reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke. Good cholesterol keeps your cells healthy and neutralizes inflammation and oxidants. This prevents blood clots in the arteries.
Is excess good cholesterol also dangerous?
Dr. Vanita told that the amount of good cholesterol in our blood should be between 50mg/dL to 80mg/dL. Even if the level is less than this, the risk of many serious diseases will increase. If the good cholesterol exceeds 80mg/dL, then it also starts harming the body. If the good cholesterol is too much, then it can stop protecting the heart from bad cholesterol and this can increase the risk of death. However, the chances of extreme decrease or sudden increase in the level of good cholesterol are less. Usually, good cholesterol can fluctuate due to diseases.
