If there is already excess acid in the stomach, then tea can increase this acid even more. The pH value of tea is below 7. Normal black tea has 4.9 to 5.5. The lower the pH value is below 7, the more acidic its nature will be. Therefore, when the acidic nature of tea is more, it will produce more acid in the stomach. This can also cause many serious diseases. Therefore, it is said that tea should not be consumed in excess.

Dr. Priyanka Rohatgi told that the astringent taste of tea comes from tannin compound. Excessive consumption of tannin compound causes stomach related problems but there can be many other side effects after this. According to NCBI research paper, if tannin enters the body in excess, it reduces appetite and also reduces the growth rate. Metabolism slows down. Even protein digestion is affected. In a research, it has been found that tannin can also cause stomach cancer. According to Dr. Priyanka, excessive tannin causes complaints of stomach pain, vomiting, nausea etc. However, it is not necessary that this happens in every person. Due to all these reasons, tea should be consumed in limited quantity.

Dr. Priyanka Rohatgi says that this is the reason why we recommend drinking a glass of water 15 minutes before drinking tea. By drinking water, tannin gets diluted quickly in the stomach, due to which it goes to the kidney very quickly from where it is excreted through urine. At the same time, drinking water also helps in reducing the effect of tannin in the mouth and teeth. After drinking water, a layer is formed there for some time due to which the effect of tannin becomes minor. Not only this, tea also contains caffeine which causes intoxication. Water also reduces its effect.
