Washington: US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke to each other over the phone on Tuesday. During this, both the leaders stressed on stopping the increasing tension in the US-China relationship. Taiwan, Artificial Intelligence and security issues were discussed between the two leaders. This was the first conversation between the two leaders after the November summit in California. The two leaders also discussed military-to-military ties and enhanced cooperation to stop the flow of deadly fentanyl from China. Fentanyl is a ‘synthetic’ painkiller which is also used for intoxication. This talk between the two leaders is also being seen as the beginning of high-level contacts to be held in the next few weeks. Finance Minister Janet Yellen is scheduled to visit China on Thursday. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Antony Blinken will visit China in the coming weeks.
Discussion on Taiwan
Taiwan was also discussed between Joe Biden and Xi Jinping. Their conversation took place before Taiwan’s newly elected President Lai Ching-te took office next month. Biden reaffirmed America’s long-standing “One China” policy and reiterated that the United States opposes any means of coercion to bring Taiwan under Beijing’s control.
China opposes America
China considers Taiwan a domestic matter and has strongly opposed US support for the island. Biden also expressed concern over China’s operations in the South China Sea. Next week, Biden will host Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida for a joint summit at the White House. ‘China’s influence in the region’ has been placed at the top of the agenda of this summit.
Biden raised the issue of problems of American citizens
In talks with Xi, Biden pressed China to do more to meet its commitments to stem the flow of illicit drugs and prevent their exports. He also raised concerns about human rights in China, including Hong Kong’s new restrictive national security laws and the treatment of minority groups. He also raised the issue of the plight of American citizens detained in China or prevented from leaving. AP
