New Delhi. The Supreme Court on Friday appointed former judge AK Sikri as the chairman of a high-powered committee set up to assess the impact of the Chardham project on the entire Himalayan valley. A division bench of Supreme Court Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice Surya Kant accepted the resignation of Professor Ravi Chopra, former chairman of the committee.
Attorney General KK Venugopal, representing the Centre, told the bench that Justice Sikri is currently heading the monitoring committee and that is why he should be appointed as the chairman of the committee.
Accepting the advice of the Attorney General, the Bench appointed retired Supreme Court judge Justice Sikri as the chairman of the high-powered committee.
Chardham Highway is a 900 km long road project and it is the link between the Char Dhams of Uttarakhand.
In December 2020, the Ministry of Defense had sought permission from the Supreme Court for the widening of three national highways from Rishikesh to Rishikesh, Rishikesh to Gangotri and Tanakpur to Pithoragarh for the security of the nation.
